Nestled along Guatemala's pacific coast in the surfing village of El Paredon, Casa Hibisco is a beachfront family vacation haven where modern architecture meets local craftsmanship.

The 6,500-square-foot (600-square-metre) beachfront house rises from the black sand coastline as a testament to thoughtful design and cultural heritage. Conceived by a New York-based husband-wife duo, who fell under the spell of El Paredon's energy, the property serves as both a bridge to their children's Guatemalan roots and an invitation for guests to experience the magic of this Pacific paradise.
The heart of Casa Hibisco beats within its open-air central pavilion, where a 17-meter synthetic palm leaf roof floats overhead—a contemporary interpretation of traditional palapa architecture that keeps the space naturally cool by providing shade and allowing heat to escape upward. The open-plan living area flows into a dramatic infinity pool that appears to reach toward the waves. As the sun sets, the pool becomes a mirror, reflecting every hue of the sky.

The home's U-shaped design extends two parallel arms toward the Pacific, with floor-to-ceiling louvered doors that blur the lines between inside and out, inviting the tropical breeze to dance through the rooms. Panoramic-view terraces and lush landscaping immerse the property in its tropical surroundings, while air conditioning and ceiling fans ensure comfort throughout.
Ancient meets contemporary in every detail, with each element carefully chosen to age gracefully in harmony with the coastal environment. Walls finished in locally-sourced flagstone and Chukum—a hand-applied Mayan stucco technique—create a warm, rustic atmosphere.
Morlon stone flooring grounds the space in volcanic beauty, while the kitchen's elegant granite countertops, bar and island create a sophisticated culinary hub. Custom pigmented cement tiles, teak furnishings, artisanal brick, ceramic lighting fixtures and art installations throughout showcase locally sourced materials and the craftsmanship of regional artisans.

Just 2.5 hours from Guatemala City, Casa Hibisco offers front-row access to El Paredon's renowned surf breaks and relaxed beach culture. Here, days unfold to the rhythm of the waves, whether you're surfing, playing volleyball at the beach bar, watching sea turtles nest on the black sand, or exploring the surrounding mangrove forests.
